„Medium” – film analysis (written and directed by Jacek Koprowicz)
Agenda:
• Film duration (90 min). So far “Medium” has been the only worldwide recognizable Polish horror movie (the copyrights to show the film were bought by circa 40 countries – it has been shown in Japan, the USA, Argentina, all over Europe and even in Africa). It is out of the traditional classification of the genre; it is a mixture of horror, thriller and action movie based on the structure of a crime story.
• Introduction. Historical outline. Systemization of the genre: crime story – horror movie. The notion of ALIEN in horror movies.
• Master Class. The analysis of the film structure aided by presenting some scenes. Visualizing the following narrative structures in “Medium” according to Stephen King’s concept: Discovery. Approval. Clash. Fulfilment. The art of asking and answering questions in films about the occult. The function of vision and the composition of the film frame, the camera movement, space, colour scheme – joining the real and the unreal world. Building up mystery.
• Panel discussion.
